Trip to Kyrgyzstan

In July 2010 I was lucky enough to travel to northern Kyrgyzstan, a fascinating and little-known region. It was worth having to turn down an invitation from Emma Chapman to perform with the Brothers of Baladi! Kyrgyzstan is remarkable for its unspoilt natural beauty and as such it is a photographer’s and explorer’s dream. My next major trip is likely to be to Tajikistan in 2011 where I am hoping to have as much exposure to dance as possible, and hopefully also visit the Pamirs.

In Search of Simorgh

On Sunday November 21st 2010 I took part in ‘In Search of Simorgh’, a theatrical dance adaptation based on the 12th century epic poem by Farid ud-Din Attar, ‘The Conference of the Birds’. It was held at the Logan Hall Theatre in London on behalf of the Iran’s Children Charity and featured contemporary dance by performers from the Laban School, narration and Persian dance performed by me. The musicians were Malik Tebrizli and Will Smith (percussion), Imamyar Hasanov (kamancheh), Rufat Hasanov (tar) and Hamidreza Rast (santoor) who played a variety of Iranian and Azerbaijani pieces. I performed two Persian dance solos, one of which can be viewed on Vimeo, and danced with the Laban dancers during the main body of the show. The result was an exciting and wholly successful fusion of Persian and contemporary dance in one performance space. The contemporary dance choreography was devised by Zinzi Minott and the dancers were Joel Rose, Fayola Dawes, Masako Matsushito, Elisa Vassena and Cornelia Voglmeyer. The show was a huge success and raised around £10,000 for the charity. There is already talk of further performances of this piece, so watch this space!!
